Caligo is the scientific name for the Owl butterfly, which are identifiable by large spots on their wings that resemble owls’ eyes. Though this trait is meant to disguise them from predators the deeper spiritual meaning is that these remarkable winged creatures can peer into the darkness. Also, when observing the life cycle of butterflies, there are correlations between their developmental stages and that of spiritual development.

In the early stages of life, like caterpillars, individual’s often feel aimless and focused on survival. For those who experience a spiritual awakening, there is then the transition phase into inward reflection of what it means to be a particular individual and to be alive. When an individual breaks through this cycle and emerges, they may find themselves facing their shadow (the parts of themselves that they have rejected, repressed, and/or denied), which begins the process of re-integration. From here, the next phase is that of metaphorically go from crawling on their belly, to the chrysalis, emerging into creatures of flight.

During this process of spiritual development, individuals are often confronted with difficult past experiences and patterns that they have been carrying due to wounding. If one is to break these cycles, they must confront their past and reclaim their lost parts. The psychedelic experience often expedites this process when the medicine turns the mirror back around in a way that one normally wouldn’t be capable of witnessing.

With integration, the bond of experience can enhance relationships with significant others. By utilizing this access point in the early post-medicine phase, individuals can open new channels in communication and behavior.
